Are You a High Performer or Workaholic?

Yesterday, a neighbor and I were discussing how things were going at work and commenting on the differences between the performance level of co-workers.

We agreed that some co-workers seem to think they are working super-hard, but don’t really get much done. While others (we consider ourselves in this group) work smart and hard, get much done and have more free time and flexibility.

I recall, when I was still a citizen of Corporate America, someone asked: “How is it that you are able to get so much done?“, in a complimentary sort of way. I thanked them for their feedback, but had other thoughts in my head…

The real answer involved several things:

  1. When I was at work, I’d be at work. It was NOT social hour. If I stopped by the water cooler it was to get water, not to talk about the plight of the local sports team. What do they have to do with my future? NOTHING!
  2. I arrived at work way before everyone else, so that I was able to get much of my day’s work done BEFORE all the interruptions (and useless meetings) began.
  3. At lunch you’d find me at my desk – working!
  4. At 5pm you’d see me exit the building so that I could be home to eat dinner with my family, get ready for the Cub Scouts meeting, Little League game or other activity.
  5. When I had extra work to do (frequently the case) I’d crack open the laptop for a couple hours at night to get ahead of the game for the next day.
  6. These after hours duties often included getting a call in the middle of the night because a customer’s hair was on fire due to a service outage.

Some might consider the above an example of a workaholic. I’d beg to differ.

An article that I came across today on Yahoo! Finance shares great perspective on the difference between a high performer and workaholic. Click here to read this article if you’d like to knock it out of the park in 2015, vs. simply working yourself to the bone.

In closing, there is a big/huge difference between being busy and actually getting meaningful stuff done.

So, which are you: A high performer or workaholic?

Only YOU can make 2015 a GREAT year!

Want Clearer Skies in 2015?

Have you ever asked yourself: “Why is all this [bad] stuff happening to me?!?!

At one point in time, we’ve likely all asked ourselves this question.

The reality is that most life situations (good or bad) result from our own actions or decisions.

Let’s share just one example from a young man’s life with whom I am quite familiar…

  • Pulled over for speeding
  • Must pay a fine. Ouch!
  • Receives the latest bill from the auto insurance company. Insurance rate increases. Ouch again!
  • Wraps his Mustang around a telephone pole, totaling it. Thankfully, no-one was hurt.
  • Buys a brand new Firebird
  • Insurance rate jumps again, SIGNIFICANTLY!
  • Pulled over for speeding (actually, doubling the speed limit, a criminal offense)
  • Must take time off from work to appear in court (for the criminal offense)
  • Must pay a hefty fine. OUCH!
  • Receives a letter from the auto insurance company stating that coverage has ceased due to being such a high risk.
  • Must obtain state sponsored auto insurance for high risk drivers, in a high risk vehicle. VERY EXPENSIVE.
  • Realizes the Firebird can’t be sold as more is owed than it is worth and doesn’t have the cash to make up the difference
  • Required to work overtime EVERY week just to continue operating the car

The question is then exclaimed: Why are all these people against me?!?!

Are you kidding me? The entire chain of unfortunate events resulted solely from this persons bad decisions and actions.

Well, for those who thought I was talking about one of my boys. Wrong. That person was me, in my early 20’s. And, it all occurred inside a couple of years.

As a result of the above (and other) bad decisions I had significant motivation to do whatever it took to dig myself out of the hole I had dug for myself. It was at this time that I “jumped the tracks” in my life and began my “boot camp experience”, which was covered in a prior post.

Reminds me of a quote:

Doing the best at this moment puts you in the best place for the next moment. ~ Oprah Winfrey

Said another way: To make a better tomorrow (future) make better decisions and take better actions today! Coming from personal experience I’ve found this to be pretty simple and very true!

So, if you are in a place where dark clouds are hovering over your head, consider what actions or decisions you took (or didn’t take) that may be contributing factors. Then, make a commitment (right now) that going forward only good actions will be taken and good decisions will be made.

Doing so will clear the skies ahead. It may take weeks, months or even years for the clouds to completely clear away. But, make no mistake: they will.

Only YOU can make it a Happy New Year!

On Leaps of Faith Providence Moves Too

It is that time of year when many will decide upon their New Year’s Resolutions. This may include a list of things that will be given up or goals to be achieved in the coming year. In considering the latter, it is suggested that we think big.

Too often we only set little goals for which we can see each step it will take to get there. And, we may achieve these goals. All good – and comfortable.

What if we were to set bigger goals and leave room for Providence to move too.

Following is one of my favorite quotes which is often (incorrectly) attributed to Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.

Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back– Concerning all acts of initiative (and creation), there is one elementary truth that ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans: that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then Providence moves too. All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one’s favor all manner of unforeseen incidents and meetings and material assistance, which no man could have dreamed would have come his way. Whatever you can do, or dream you can do, begin it. Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it. Begin it now.~ W.H. Murray

I find this to be SO powerful; and, more importantly, 100% true!

That is, there have been numerous times in my life when I stepped out on a leap of faith. Each and every time everything ultimately worked out!

This is not suggesting that we make reckless moves with little to no planning. What is being suggested is that when we have a big idea, dream or goal and have prepared as best as “reasonably” possible there comes a time when we must “begin it now!”

Example…

It wasn’t long after I had started my first “real” job out of college when I realized I wanted to own and operate my own consulting business. Being in my early 20’s, with long hair and no real-world experience I wasn’t the ideal candidate for this reality (at the time). First, I had to put a number of years under my belt working in the business world, as I climbed the corporate ladder, developing the necessary scars of experience.

In 2001 the time was coming near, to launch my business. I was VP of Customer Care at a now defunct Internet Service Provider, during the collapse of the dot-com bubble. During that time I had the unenviable position of being one of the “front men” who would meet with customers to tell them that everything was going to be ok. I’d then return to the office and, working with my boss and peers, identify ways we could continuously downsize (shrink costs) in concert with our declining revenues. Things were definitely NOT going to be ok. I had to get out of there before the lights went out!

At this point, I engaged a “for-fee” mentor to put together the business plan for my consulting practice. Since the company I was working for had a set of golden handcuffs on my wrist I elected to wait until the appropriate time to issue my decision to resign.

Finally, the day came, in April of 2002, when I let my boss know that I’d be leaving the company. What an absolutely freeing feeling that was, as a result of having prepared myself as best as reasonably possible, for a long held goal in my life…

A few days after leaving corporate employment, I was updating a friend at church who commented: “That was a leap of faith, wasn’t it?

Yep, it was!

The economy was in turmoil. It was NOT a good time for business, much less launching a new one. And, I had absolutely ZERO business opportunities lined up. But, Providence moved too!

After exiting corporate employment and committing to the execution of my business plan everything came together perfectly, in due time. If you’d like to read about the details of my business launch simply click here.

While the above may have been one of my biggest leaps of faith it is only one of many.

The whole experience makes me think of another quote that builds on the one shared above:

Jump, and you will find out how to unfold your wings as you fall. ~ Ray Bradbury

In closing, decide upon some big moves you’d like to make in 2015, or steps you can take that will enable big moves in the coming years. Only YOU can design YOUR life. It doesn’t happen by waiting, hoping or wishing. Set the goal. Begin working towards it now and have complete trust that Providence will move too!
