Have No Fear (of Public Speaking)!

In my experience there are a few key skills that are crucial to success, pretty much regardless of the chosen field of endeavor. One of those skills is public speaking.

It has been said that people fear public speaking more-so than death. Amazing!

I can honestly say this once applied to me. In college when I was asked to give my first speech I freaked out (cold sweat, dry mouth, blank stare); a very poor showing indeed. Later, in my 20’s when involved in a network marketing business (a story for another time) I was “tricked” by my sponsor into giving a presentation to a group of my friends. I wasn’t too happy with my sponsor at the time (I responded by calling him a…not so nice name 🙂 ). Once I completed the presentation (and I did know “pretty much” what I was talking about) I felt GOOD!

The lid came off as I realized that I could do this! While I still get nervous in advance of “most” public speaking engagements, it is now an enjoyable RUSH!

There are a number of ways to develop public speaking skills. I’d highly recommend checking out Toastmasters International, for a club near you!

A fantastic book I’ve read (numerous times) on the subject is:

The most important advice I could give is “just do it!” There is nothing like having something to say, to a gathered audience (of 3 or 300) and letting it fly! Yes, you will make mistakes. If you know what you are talking about (just don’t pretend to “know it all”, no-one does) and prepare in advance you will find that most audiences are forgiving. Remember, the majority of participants fear what you are doing (public speaking) more-so than death! At least you’re up there doing it…

2 applicable quotes:

Know what you wish to say, say it with all the feeling you command, and then sit down! ~ Napoleon Hill

Do the thing you fear, and the death of fear is certain. ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

The more we do those things we fear, or are uncomfortable doing, the more we breakdown our “self-imposed” limitations. Overcoming the fear of public speaking (and/or continuously improving this skill) is a crucial step towards igniting your career! Enjoy the process!

Who Pays for College and How?

During senior year of high school my Dad pushed for a decision on what I would go to college for. I had ABSOLUTELY no idea. Knowing I liked to tinker with electronics, he said “Here are 2 options; electronics and computer programming.” I said, “Well, let’s go with, um, ahhh, hmmm…Computer Programming.” The options presented were at what is now called Northern Maine Community College.

We are taking a similar approach with our kids. That is, having them start at a local / community college and we “foot the bill.” There are numerous benefits, including:

  • It being much easier to “pay as you go” (loan free)
  • There are no (additional) expenses for room and board (although these boys are eating a whole lot more!)
  • When an early mistake is made (i.e., a class must be retaken) it isn’t too painful/costly
  • Provides an opportunity to try things out (college as well as the field of study) to get their feet wet and determine if this is truly the direction they want to go, making a change in direction less painful/costly
  • Credits from community college can be transferred to 4-year colleges saving 10’s of thousands of dollars!!!
  • Bottom-line: Provides a foundational college education with no loans hanging over their head

Once they have achieved an Associates Degree, and possibly a Certificate or two, a decision can be made regarding the continuation of that education. This is where they begin “footing the bill.” I’m willing to co-sign for loans, but they take ownership of this next level of investment in their education — if they choose to continue. This includes continuing to maintain a job to cover their living expenses and to begin making payments on their newly acquired school loans (while still in school). This approach is working well so far; 3 in process, 1 to go 🙂

While I may have “only” achieved my Associates Degree I took advantage of EVERY training opportunity provided by employers and have consistently invested (out-of-pocket) in continuous education — in many forms. The result: Achieving “only” an Associates Degree hasn’t held me back in the least.

Make no mistake, I believe that a solid education is crucial! My experience is that it isn’t “so much” the degree achieved or the college attended, but what you do with that degree and how you continue your education — FOREVER!

A few pointers related to college-related books, as they are EXPENSIVE! Once your student has their list of classes they can find out what books are needed for each – from their teacher. NOT the school bookstore. Go to Amazon.com to acquire these vs. the school bookstore and you will save a great deal! Then, monitor the use of the books after classes have begun. There have been numerous cases for our kids when the teacher indicates “This is recommended reference material, but we really aren’t going to use it.” When you observe this, send it back to Amazon for a refund!

Economists report that a college education adds many thousands of dollars to a man’s lifetime income – which he then spends sending his son to college. ~ Bill Vaughn

Think BIG!

I was talking with my son who described a typical conversation that a dreamer (I mean goal seeker) has.

He and his brother are attending college, working towards their degree in Exercise Science. These guys are jacked!

He mentions to a friend: “I’d like to be a fitness model and even act one day. You know, like Arnold Schwarzenegger.”

His friend said: “You can’t do that, I mean that is Arnold Schwarzenegger!

My son responds with: “He had it harder than I do and made it big; so why can’t I?.”

My son finishes our conversation with: “Dad, I know that all 4 of us (boys) are going to be millionaires.” Music to my ears 🙂

The biggest obstacle to wealth is fear. People are afraid to think big, but if you only think small, you’ll only achieve small things. ~ T. Harv Eker

My son’s perspective is exceptionally clear. No one achieves their dreams and goals overnight. It takes consistent and NEVER-ENDING effort chipping away at it on a daily basis. Then, when you achieve your goal the world looks on and remarks: “S/he is so highly favored and lucky!

No, No, No. The achiever simply made NO EXCUSES and did WHATEVER IT TOOK to achieve their goals and dreams!

What is the definition of luck? When preparedness meets opportunity. Want some luck? GET PREPARED for the abounding opportunities!!!

How does one prepare? By reading positive, constructive materials and listening to the same. Attending training. Thinking BIG! Working hard and smart. Not by sitting, waiting and wishing.
