Imparting Timeless Wisdom To Our Children

For my first official post I thought I’d share an idea my wife and I have used to impart timeless wisdom to our 4 boys.

Let’s face it, raising great kids takes guts! Doing so requires a careful balance between direct control / guidance (when it is absolutely required) and providing indirect guidance / letting them figure things out on their own.

Having mom or dad say something that we hope will be useful in guiding our child(ren) can often (at least seemingly) go in one ear and out the other. Don’t despair. A lot truly does stick. You’ll notice this when your child (eventually, as they get older) mentions, “you were right.” Yes, this does REALLY happen!

One thing we have done to reinforce solid life principles with our boys, in an indirect way, is to post what I’ve called “Wisdom Quotes” on our fridge. These are quotes that I’ve come across that have provided me a particularly useful and timely “shot in the arm” and inspiration for the day.

Over time I’ll collect a handful of quotes, print them out and post them on the fridge. After 4-6 weeks I’ll rinse and repeat (post another set of quotes). We’ve been doing this for quite some time. And, we are most definitely observing the result that this (and other things we are doing, to be shared later) is having on our boys!

I’ve shared “some” of my favorite quotes on our “Favorite Quotes” page. Check them out and see if any could work for you (and your kids).

A quote that is apropos for this post is:

“You are what you are and where you are because of what has gone into your mind. You can change what you are and where you are by changing what goes into your mind.” ~ Zig Zigler

Let me know what you think and / or feel free to share useful ideas you’ve used to impart timeless wisdom to your kids (without them looking at you like you had 2 heads 🙂 ).

Enjoy the day!

Introduction

Throughout my life and career I’ve been mentored by NUMEROUS individuals (starting with my awesome parents), have become a voracious reader, a continuous learner and willing to go the extra miles. The result: I’m now, truly, “living my dream” and working on accomplishing “the next.” What is my dream? Back in 1988 I defined my dream as:

  • Having a solid, loving family of my own
  • Being self-employed
  • Being completely debt-free
  • Experiencing the world (travel and adventure)
  • Living in a house on a crystal clear lake

At this point, I can check off the first 4 items on the list 🙂

Increasingly, I’ve had the opportunity to mentor others, not the least of which are my 4 absolutely AMAZING sons (ages 24, 21, 19 and 16, at time of writing)! I thoroughly enjoy the process of meeting with people, learning what they are up to and offering insight, advice, guidance and connections that may help them get to the next level.

When I chat with someone about their goals, dreams and aspirations I typically recommend (or give them) a book based on what they would seem to need at the time. Or, I share wisdom that I’ve learned from others that helped me accomplish specific goals, objectives and dreams.

To that end, I realized it would be helpful to others if I shared this information more broadly. Hence, the purpose of this blog.

Now that you’ve arrived take a look around. If you like what you see click “Follow”, bookmark it and/or come back often as more info is posted to hopefully aid in YOUR success.

Wishing Success for You!
